SBD is the only organization officially recognized by the Federal Council of Medicine and the Brazilian Medical Association as representative of the country’s dermatologists. It is also the second largest dermatological society in the world with 6,000 members in 23 Brazilian states through its regional offices as well as 67 accredited university hospitals.

SBD contributes to the orientation and selection of the medical-social aspects of Dermatology; scope of dermatologists field and other matters of interest to practice the profession in society such as the channel of reference to propose measures to relevant organizations to preserve discipline and oversee the practice of Dermatology.
